If you will ask me, is it worth starting a blog before 2019 ends? My short answer is a resounding yes!

I don’t know about you, for me if you want to do something you are interested in why not do it, instead of just thinking about it nonstop. Overthinking won’t bring you any good. You’ll be in an analysis paralysis mode like you are walking on a treadmill without going nowhere.

In this post, I will teach you how you can start your blog in under 15 minutes. Yes, in under an hour you will have a blog up and running. You only need to do the 5 simple steps which I laid out below.

First, let’s find out..

How do bloggers make money from blogging?

There are a couple of ways bloggers make money. Let me share some with you.

1. Affiliate income

This is the most common way to make money blogging. In fact, it’s where I made my first $500 and I’m not even consistently blogging for a week. I only made a review of the course that I took and when someone purchased through my unique referral link I get a small commission from the course owner.

Affiliate marketing is you recommend someone’s product to your audience. You can create a review of a product that you like or a course that you bought that has helped you a lot and made a big impact on your life. You can make a tutorial for tools or software that you are using. Share your review post on social media especially Pinterest to get traffic.

When it comes to recommending products, it would be best if you like them. Don’t recommend crappy products to your audience just to earn quick money. Your audience may not like that and you may lose their trust in you. You may earn money in the beginning but in the long run, it would not do good in your blogging journey.

Two affiliate marketing networks I also use are:

2. Virtual Assistant Services

When you start blogging about a certain topic, you become an expert on that subject. I started my blog 3 years ago to showcase my skills as a Virtual Assistant. I made tutorials on the tools and software that I am using and share them on different social media platforms. With that, I was able to land new clients from social media.

When creating your blog post, put a link to your contact or calendar link so that potential clients can schedule calls with you. You can use Calendly to setup your available schedules. It’s a free online appointment scheduling software.

3. Ebooks

Selling ebooks is a great way to make money blogging. Check Amazon Kindle and you’ll see there are lots of people producing their own ebooks and lots of buyers are consuming them. It doesn’t have to be a novel, think of it as a longer form of a blog post.

Do you need to write hundreds of pages? No, as long as your ebook is packed with information and it’s a topic relevant to your readers, it would be enough.

I started creating a relationship ebook after I got married 4 years ago lol, only to realize I don’t know the topic well. If you want to start your own ebook, make sure you can write about it and should be interesting enough for you and most importantly for your readers.

Check out this FREE 23-page guide that will show you step-by-step how to create, package, and sell your e-books online.

4. Online Courses

Mosts blogger transition from ebooks to creating and selling online courses. One thing you should consider when creating an online course is it should be a topic that people want to learn about you and of course one you know a lot about.

The price point of a course depends on the depth of your course, your expertise level and how well your audience knows you. I’ve bought a short course for $25. I’ve seen some sell their course for $97 and have also seen high-level experts sell them for $1999.

I am a guest lecturer to Social Media Academy where I teach about Pinterest Marketing. Things you may need when creating your video tutorials are powerpoint, video editings software like Camtasia and Filmora and your confidence 🙂

5. Google Adsense

Another way to make money from blogging for beginners is to put ads on your site using Adsense, which is the advertising platform owned by Google.

What you need to do is to sign up for Google Adsense and allow the Google ad platform to place ads on your blog. You decide where and how many ads to show on your blog.

How do you get paid from this? You are either paid by the number of views the ads receives on your site or when someone clicks on your ad. There is a minimum of $100 before you can withdraw the money from Google Adsense.

6. Freelance Writing

Do you love and enjoy writing? If you can write, a blog is a very good proof to showcase your writing skills. You can even sell freelance writing services to online entrepreneurs, coaches, and companies. Many of them are looking to create their content on their websites and social media.

Pick who do you want to work with and use your blog as your portfolio for your writing ability and when you reach out to potential clients.

How much does it cost to start a blog?

The cost of my blog in a year is $62.4. I got my domain name for $15 from Godaddy and my hosting plan from Siteground for $47.4. In under $100 you can set up your own blog!

If you really are serious in blogging, you need to get a self-hosted website and don’t rely on the free 3rd party platform. When you set up your own blog, you can back up your data and design your blog the way you want it.

With 3rd party platform, your data may get lost anytime because you don’t own it. They can turn down your website anytime and you can do nothing about it.

If you want to get 75% – 95% OFF on your domain name and hosting, sign up to GoDaddy and Siteground newsletter so you can receive their promo offers once in a while.

How to Start a Blog in 5 Simple Steps

1. Get a domain name
2. Get a hosting plan
3. Install WordPress
4. Update DNS (domain nameservers) setting
5. Install a theme

1. Get a domain name

Basically, this is going to be your website address. Treat it like your home address. Brainstorm some ideas of what you want to call your blog. Once you figured out what it is, create your account to GoDaddy and check if your chosen domain name is available. Then proceed to check out. That’s easy it is.

I am recommending GoDaddy because they always have a discounted price which is good for beginners in blogging.

2. Get a hosting plan

Every website should have a website host. This is the place where all the files of your website live like your information, images, video and other content.

In simple terms, this is your house. Your domain name is your postal address and your web hosting is where you live lol.

I have been using Siteground for almost 3 years now and it’s proven to me that it’s very nice, easy to use and they have an outstanding Customer Care Service.

Here’s how to get started:

Step 1. Choose your hosting plan

Step 2. Type your domain name

Step 3. Review and Complete

After that, you will get an email about your login information and your hosting information.

Hosting Information email:

3. Install WordPress

Step 1: You can install the WordPress by launching the wizard you received from your email.

Step 1.a. Or install WordPress by going to your cPanel > Softaculous and choose WordPress and install it.

Step2: Input your WordPress login details.

4. Update your DNS (domain nameservers) settings

If you get your domain name from GoDaddy, you have to point your domain name to your web hosting. But if you get your domain name from Siteground, you can skip this step.

Step 1 – Copy the 2 nameservers you received in your email about your hosting account information.

Or go to your Siteground cPanel and copy the 2 nameservers there.

Step 2: Login to your GoDaddy account. Go to <My Products>. Select your domain name and click <Manage>.

Step 3: Under Additional Settings, click <Manage DNS>.

Step 4: Click <Change> on Nameservers and <Enter my own nameservers (advanced)

Step 5: Paste the 2 nameservers and click <Save>

5. Install a theme

To go to your newly created WordPress website, type your domain name/wp-admin (Example: liezelkabigting.com/wp-admin). Then choose among the free theme available.

If you don’t like any of the theme choices, you can install for one for now and you can always change this in the settings later.

That’s it! You just set up your blog in under 15 minutes. Amazing isn’t it? Now you can customize your blog and publish your first post!
