With over 250 million users actively pinning every month on Pinterest, you’re missing out if you don’t use this platform for your business.
Pinterest is a powerful marketing channel if you are looking to reach your high-value customers and activate their interest in what you have to offer. But before that, you should know the right way on how to be visible to your target audience.
Yes, it may be easy to just sign up as a business and follow through with your common sense on the step by step instructional guide. But if not done correctly, you may end up frustrated “why the heck am I not getting traction using Pinterest?”
In this blog post, I’m going to show you how you can magnetize your ideal clients using Pinterest. It’s not as complicated as you think it is. Ready? Cool!
1. Upload your best headshot
You have to make sure that your profile photo is a photo of you and color is preferable over black and white.
Since Pinterest is still a female-dominated platform so if you’re a male, it’s advisable to change your profile picture to include your children or your loved one to make your account more female-friendly.
To upload your picture, go to the Settings → Profile → Change picture.
2. Include keywords of your niche in your business name.
By placing keywords about what you do on your account name, you give your account more SEO juice. Then when someone searches for those keywords and filter by “People”, your account would pop up in the search results.
Doing this would also allow your visitors to know right away what you’re up to, as your account name is showed up at the very top of your Pinterest page.
To update your business name, go to Settings → Profile → Business Name
3. Create your profile description that quickly identifies who you are.
With only a small amount of text available to create your profile description, it can be challenging to fit both of your personality and relevant keywords. So create a description that clearly states who you are, what you do and you can include an actionable step to direct readers back to a specific landing page, blog page or to a free download.
To update your profile description, go to Settings → Profile → About you.
4. Create 10 personal boards with simple and straightforward board titles and put keywords on your board descriptions.
If you’re new to Pinterest, it would be smart to create at least 10 personal boards that are keyword based. You should avoid using cutesy board names, instead, name your boards after keywords and put keywords on your board descriptions because this will also be good for SEO.
To create a board, go to Boards → Create Board
To know what keywords are popular on Pinterest, you can use the search bar inside the platform. Type in the words you think your ideal clients are searching for in order to find your contents and you’ll see all the keywords from the different colors just like on the below image. Pinterest showed them based on popularity from left to the right.
Want to know the secret? Put yourself in your customer’s shoes. If you’re the customer who wants to find out about what you sell, what you should be searching on Google or Pinterest so you can find your product or service? I hope you get the point.
You can also use the Pinterest ads platform to search for keywords and know exactly how many searches a particular keyword has in a month.

5. Pin at least 15-20 custom pins on your personal boards
Pinning of at least 15-20 custom pins on your personal boards will make you look active on the platform. If you don’t have many custom pins of your own yet, you can repin influencer’s content. This way you’ll start to get traction on your Pinterest profile because these are already getting traffic from a large audience and if you repin popular contents on your personal boards, there’s a chance you’ll gain new followers.
6. Enable the Showcase Widget
Showcasing your top five boards in your Pinterest page highlight the best aspects of your business for your visitors.
If you don’t know what to showcase, you can try the following:
- A personal board dedicated only for your blog contents or your Best of Board
- A board depending on the season or current events to showcase your specific themed events.
- A board that performs well or a board that contains all your top performing content.
To access the featured boards, go to Settings → Profile → Under Location → Featured Boards → Edit
Well, that’s it! Those simple 6 steps will give you a good start on how to build your brand on Pinterest.
